September News

Today we had fun in the sun! We lifted our potatoes, some for eating and some to keep to make leek and potato soup in Jan/Feb.

Lots more sweet peas, peas and beans, lettuce and tomatoes harvested.

All pupils got a lot of potato bags and used flowerpots pots washed for the winter. They also admired the leeks which are still growing.

Apple and Rowan Jelly Making

The Gardening Club members had a busy day yesterday and this morning.

They chopped apples and boiled them up with the rowan berries.

While they boiled, the pupils went outside and picked sweet peas, tomatoes and lettuce.

When the jelly was nearly ready the pupils built a castle of books and strained the "mush" to get the juice.

This morning the pupils measured the juice and added sugar and lemon juice and boiled the mixture again till it set on a saucer. While it boiled they decorated jar covers.

Delicious apple and rowan jelly - good on bread or scones. But also good with meat and on a cheese sandwich.

Potato Growing

In April we planted one potato each in a bag. Then in June we saw the shaws (the stalks) all growing tall and some had flowers.

Now, 5 months later, we have tipped out the bags and found lots of potatoes - tiny ones, middle sized ones and big ones.
They will be very nice to eat boiled or steamed - best new potatoes you'll ever have tasted. Well done P3!

Gardening Club

This week we picked sweet peas and took home lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage and turnip, peas and beans.

Great outcome from all the children's hard work - and more to come!
