5th Green Flag for Houston
Houston pupils have done it again and have been awarded their 5th Green
Flag. Mrs.McPherson was supported by Miss McGowan and Mrs J Dunn to ensure that
Eco duties were carried out, and that interesting topics relating to the
environment were covered. A huge thank you to our wonderful staff team. The Eco
Assessors were particularly impressed with our Rainforest, Vandalism and
Mini-beast topics and especially our vertical learning Forest Fun Day. A special
well done to all our Eco Representatives and Rangers who carried out their
duties diligently.
This session we are working on transforming our courtyard into an outdoor
sensory classroom. If you have any sensory plants going spare or have any shiny,
spherical outdoor ornaments, we would very much appreciate them.
Houston Seagull
We held a competition to raise money to buy a tracker for our very own
seagull and raised £45.50. The pupils had to come up with a creative name for
the Houston gull. We had lots of entries, but the most original name came from
Jasmine Rae of Primary 1B, with 'Flyback'. We certainly hope that our seagull
will go on many adventures, but always come back to Renfrewshire.
Interesting Seagull Facts
- Seagulls like freshwater, but they’ll drink sea water.
- Two glands near their eyes drip the salt in the water so they don’t get sick.
- Seagulls make nests simply by hollowing out a soft spot in the sand. They try to choose an area near grass, rocks or logs for protection.
- Seagulls mate for life. During mating, the male brings the female food.
- After the chicks hatch, one parent stays with the nest all the time. The other parent brings food.
- The oldest gull found was 49 years old!Jasmine with her very own soft toy seagull 'Flyback'
