Potato Growing

In April we planted one potato each in a bag. Then in June we saw the shaws (the stalks) all growing tall and some had flowers.

Now, 5 months later, we have tipped out the bags and found lots of potatoes - tiny ones, middle sized ones and big ones.
They will be very nice to eat boiled or steamed - best new potatoes you'll ever have tasted. Well done P3!

Gardening Club

This week we picked sweet peas and took home lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage and turnip, peas and beans.

Great outcome from all the children's hard work - and more to come!

Gardening Club

Busy day back at the Gardening Club!

Only one sunflower left flowering  on our first day back at Gardening Club. Mrs Morrison told us that they were lovely over the summer holidays and that they are never usually over by this time, but we have had funny weather this year.

We picked lots of sweet peas and dead headed lots!
We picked broad beans, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

Then we pegged out strawberry runners to sell next year for club funds. After that we picked some rowans so we can make rowan and apple jelly one wet Thursday - I'm sure we'll get one!

Mrs Morrison gave us some chocolate mint in a pot to take home. She said that if we take it out of the pot it will spread all over our garden.

We can’t wait until next week at Gardening Club!

Successful Leaf Award 2024

Houston Primary School has been awarded its second LEAF Award. This is a wonderful achievement and links in beautifully with our, Eco School 9th Green Flag journey.

This year we decided to learn more about the Forest Cycle. Firstly we had to create a Forest Committee, carry out an awareness survey, create an action Plan, which informed and involved our community, checked progress and created a Forest Code!

We spent lots of wonderful time outside learning about the nature on our doorstep and planting to support local wildlife, especially with our amazing Pocket Garden.

Our pupils curiosity has helped them learn a lot about how plants grow and what helps them thrive.
