Gardening Club

During the summer holidays we had a few meetings. We harvested lots of raspberries, some strawberries, cabbages, lettuce, radish, lots of tomatoes and some cucumbers. We also picked 4lbs of blackcurrants (about 2Kg) and put them in the freezer so we can make jelly in the next wee while.

The gardening grannies and grandpas kept the polytunnel and the flower beds well watered, and now we are admiring the lobelia and alyssum in the tubs at the front of the school which we grew from seed.

At our first regular meeting of the term we started cutting down the raspberry canes which had fruited, and tying in the new ones ready for a good crop next year.

We planted potatoes, one bag with three potatoes each, so that we can have a wee crop of new potatoes at Christmas time.

And we weeded the raised beds, planted two bushy chrysanthemums at the front of the school, and picked lots of tomatoes and peas to take home.

Haven’t we been busy!!

Recycling Initiative Winners!

This year we aimed to recycle waste aluminium food cans and plastic bottles in exchange for Sainsbury vouchers to raise funds for the school’s Gardening Club. All classes participated in a competition to see who could recycle the most waste.

Congratulations to our winners Primary 2A who collected 446 cans and 364 plastic bottles!

The whole school successfully collected 4970 items in total, including 2457 cans and 2513 bottles!

Terranium

As part of a science topic, Primary 5 created their own terraniums. It was amazing to see how the plants created their own climates inside the sealed jars. Following this, we also designed some air quality posters.

This year’s winner of the best  Spring Bulb Planter is Primary 5/4. All classes took part and they certainly brightened up our front entrance. This is an annual competition organised by our wonderful Gardening Granny and her team.

Primary 2 have been growing ‘Magic Beans’!

What a healthy crop, I think they must have ‘Magic Green Fingers’ too!
