P4 Minibeasts Topic
Primary 4 got their hands dirty when learning about minibeasts! They worked in pairs in class to classify minibeasts then used their skills in action during their visit to Muirshiel Country Park. They also used soil from the wormery to plant seeds.

ECO News
September
The
Eco Committee have started work and received a delivery of two tonnes of sand
for Houston beach. The Rag Bag appeal was very successful and we thank all those
who donated their old clothes. Another big thank you goes to Mr McAllister who
managed to get more tyres to help the Primary 1 and 2 pupils with their outdoor
number work.
October
Craigends
Yew
Sally
Campbell from Houston Primary School and a pupil from St. Fillan's Primary went
out together to see the famous Craigends Yew. They were amazed by its enormous
girth. The tree has been selected for Scotland's Tree of the Year competition
due to its age, size and uniqueness. The girls gave the trunk a cuddle
for good luck.
The
winning tree will get £1000 for pruning, mulching, weeding, fencing and
signage.
November
Twit-Twoo
Primary
1 pupils have been learning about owls and requested for real owls to come to
school. Some children handled the birds and Mrs. Mitchell even managed to obtain
owl pellets for closer examination under our digital microscopes. The pupils
discovered hip bones, teeth and feathers belonging to small creatures that the
owls had eaten for dinner.
December
The Eco Committee invited the whole school to take part in 'Turn Off
Tuesday', which meant no electronic devices for the day and limited use of the
electric light. Certain areas of the school became darkened corridors, and the
younger pupils were very excited by this experience. It proved that we can find
alternative ways to have fun and learn. The Eco Committee recommend that adults
should try it too!
The Gardening Club, planted crocus, tulips and daffodils in large planters
in preparation for spring time for our main entrance. Mrs. Morrison and her
team, decided that each class in the school should do this too. So eighteen
large planters were purchased and filled, with the Gardening Club team taking
the leading role in supporting all the classes with planting. The outsides of
the planters were also decorated, making them extra special. I am sure you will
agree they look amazing. Mrs Morrison will be back to judge the winning
planter.
Our recycling campaign continues, and we would very much appreciate
donations of clothing for our Rag Bag initiative. Last term we gained £72.00 for
our efforts. The money gained paid for gardening equipment and seeds.
The Community Council and all of our pupils continue to make improvements
to our local environment, by regularly litter picking trimming and weeding. The
driveway down to the school is much improved. Please help to keep Houston
tidy.
